Step Into Skills Learners Cultivate Community Spirit at The Gateway Centre

by | Mar 25, 2026

On Tuesday, our Step Into Skills learners rolled up their sleeves and headed to The Gateway Centre for some outdoor learning – helping maintain the Centre’s outdoor space and supporting the local community.

The visit provided a valuable opportunity for learners to develop key employability skills while making a positive contribution to the local environment. Throughout the session, our learners demonstrated strong teamwork and initiative as they worked together on a variety of gardening tasks.

Activities included weeding garden areas, filling beds with straw and soil to support composting, planting seeds, and preparing raised beds for future growth. These practical tasks not only supported sustainability but also gave learners real-world experience in maintaining green spaces.

The time spent at The Gateway Centre highlighted the importance of community focus and practical skills. By working collaboratively and taking pride in their efforts, our learners showcased skills that are essential in the workplace, including communication, problem-solving, and adaptability.

The visit to The Gateway Centre was a rewarding experience, reinforcing the values of teamwork, personal development and independence at the heart of the Step Into Skills programme.

We were also delighted that our new Employability & Functional Skills tutor, Jenny German, joined us. A warm welcome to Jenny!
