Step Into Skills

A one-year study programme designed to help learners build confidence, independence and work-readiness, while preparing for employment, supported internships or further learning. Our pathway choices in term two allow learners to choose to focus on creative, business or sustainability skills, depending on their strengths, interests and career aspirations.

Who is this course for?

This qualification is suitable for:

  • Young people aged 16-18
  • 16-24s with an Education, Health & Care Plan (EHCP)

The course builds confidence and general employability skills, while also allowing for focus on specific work sectors – creative, business, or sustainability.

Why should I do this qualification?

Our Step Into Skills study programme is great for young people who want to learn general employability skills, but due to the pathway choices in term two, also those specifically interested in careers in creative or business fields, or sustainability. 

Learners will be supported to gain work experience, further building relevant skills, which is brilliant for confidence and enhancing CVs!

The study programme is designed to offer hands-on, practical learning and real-world experiences, supporting progression and personal development.

What will I learn?

Term One – all learners begin with a shared core programme that builds essential life and work skills, including:

  • Teamwork and communication
  • Problem solving and decision making
  • Healthy lifestyles and wellbeing
  • Employability and life skills

Term Two – learners choose one specialist pathway based on their interests, strengths and aspirations. Pathway choices are:

Step Into Creative Skills:

  • For learners with a creative mindset who enjoy expressing ideas through practical projects
  • Learners will develop an individual creative project while exploring one or more of the following areas – photography, drawing, painting, textiles or craft
  • Learners will build confidence and communication skills, explore opportunities within creative industries and understand how creative skills can support future progression

Step Into Business Skills:

  • Focuses on developing practical, real-world workplace skills through project-based learning, such as: planning and completing a business related project; working with data and information; interview preparation and communication skills; employment preparation and work-readiness; teamwork and motivation
  • Learners may take part in a Young Enterprise or community-based project, supporting the development of confidence, responsibility and employability skills

Step Into Sustainable Skills:

  • This hands-on, future-focused pathway explores sustainability, food and practical life skills through activities such as: exploring environmental issues; organic gardening and horticulture; community garden projects; growing, preparing & serving food
  • Learners develop practical skills including: preparing seasonal ingredients; using kitchen tools safely; food hygiene; health and safety; table setting and food service
  • This pathway is ideal for learners who enjoy practical learning and are interested in sustainability, food & community-based projects

For all learners we offer Functional Skills from Entry Level 1 to Level 2 in Maths and English, with flexible approaches where appropriate. In some cases, Maths and English are embedded within the core programme to support meaningful, applied learning.

All learners may have the opportunity to complete the Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, a nationally recognised programme that develops confidence, teamwork, resilience and personal achievement.

How will I be assessed?

This is an internally assessed qualification. You will be required to complete a range of assessment tasks to demonstrate your understanding of the content for each unit. These tasks will help to show your progress and development throughout the course.
