Step Into Skills is a course that helps young adults prepare for the real world with support and guidance from staff and each other. We are learning the skills needed for the workplace.

On the 17th of March, my fellow students and I from the Step into Skills course visited Suez, a waste management facility. This is a place where rubbish is processed and turned into ash, which can then be used for materials such as road gravel. Recycling and food waste are also used to generate energy to power lights and charge devices.

As the staff introduced themselves, they explained their vision for the future. Their goal is to create a more sustainable world and help reduce global warming. They hope that by encouraging everyone to use food waste bins and bags, more people will get involved in protecting the environment.

During the visit, we also took turns participating in mock interviews. This helped us understand what we need to improve and prepare ourselves for real job interviews.

In addition, we played a “characteristics” game and received feedback on our CVs and cover letters. The professionals gave us advice on what needs updating and how we can improve from a professional point of view, helping us broaden our understanding of the working world.

Talking to the professionals was very helpful, as we learned about their day-to-day roles. They also explained that apprenticeships are available within the company, allowing learners to gain experience while working. This can help ensure a strong career path. Currently, there are four people doing apprenticeships with the company.
