Why Employability Skills Matter
When we think about preparing for the future, qualifications are often one of the first things that come to mind. But being ready for the workplace is about much more than certificates and grades.
At Step Into Learning, we believe that developing employability skills is an important part of helping young people become confident, independent and ready to take their next steps.
What are employability skills?
Employability skills are the everyday skills and qualities that help us succeed in the workplace. They can be developed in the classroom, through practical activities, in the community and during work experience.
These include:
- π¬ Communication β speaking and listening to others, asking questions and sharing ideas
- π€ Teamwork β working alongside others, respecting different viewpoints and contributing to a shared goal
- β Confidence β recognising your strengths and becoming more comfortable trying new things
- β° Reliability β arriving on time, completing tasks and understanding responsibilities
- 𧩠Problem-solving β thinking about challenges and finding ways to overcome them
- π± Independence β developing the confidence to make decisions, take responsibility and complete tasks
- π‘ Adaptability β learning how to respond when situations, tasks or expectations change
Learning beyond the classroom
Employability skills aren’t only developed through lessons. Real-life experiences can give young people valuable opportunities to put their skills into practice.
At Step Into Learning, our learners have opportunities to take part in work experience, employer visits, community activities and practical projects. These experiences can help learners understand what different workplaces are like while discovering their own strengths and interests.
Work experience can be particularly valuable. From learning how to communicate with colleagues and customers to following instructions and managing responsibilities, it provides an opportunity to experience the workplace in a supportive environment, gain valuable skills and insight into the world of work, and build links and connections within their own communities, helping to increase independence and support future progression opportunities.
Building confidence for the future
Not every young person knows exactly what they want to do when they leave education β and that’s okay.
Developing employability skills can open up possibilities and help young people feel more prepared for whatever comes next, whether that’s further education, an apprenticeship, a Supported Internship or employment.
For us, success isn’t just about gaining a qualification. It’s also about helping learners recognise what they’re capable of, developing greater independence and building the skills they can take with them into their future.
At Step Into Learning, we’re helping young people take those steps β one skill, one experience and one achievement at a time.
